On the 6th of November in Finland, Swedish Heritage Day is celebrated, and in neighboring Sweden, Gustav Adolf's Day is celebrated on the same day. Gustav Adolf was the king of Sweden who lived in the 17th century and died on November 6, 1632. Gustav Adolf was an important ruler in Sweden's history because during his time Sweden became a significant player in European politics. In Finland, this very Swedish celebration became a chance to celebrate the heritage of finlandssvenskar, or the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland.
In Finland, Swedish Heritage Day is an official flag day, but there is no established way of celebrating the day. In Sweden, the day is also celebrated, and many people eat Gustav Adolf's pastries. There isn't a uniform recipe for the bread, but it often contains marzipan and the profile of Gustav Adolf is baked into it.
